ysabetwordsmith: Text says New Year Resolutions on notebook (resolutions)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith posting in [site community profile] dw_community_promo
[community profile] goals_on_dw is a community for people who like goals and goal setting. A key focus is New Year's resolutions, that being among the most popular contexts for such activities. Although the most common time is January 1, "new year" can also refer to other calendars or cultures, whatever works for you. Alternatively, just pick a time that works for you and go for it. You can introduce yourself or make new friends here.

We talk about different goal systems, pros and cons of resolutions, arts and crafts for tracking goals, human psychology, and more. You can share your resolutions or other goals. There are weekly check-in posts in January, and monthly ones in the rest of the year, for folks to talk about their accomplishments. December-January is the most active period, and it starts ramping up in November as lots of people begin thinking about their goals for the next year.

2026 Free Printable Calendars, Planners, and More is the guide post for this years goal-setting activities. For more details on relevant topics, see "Things You Can Talk About Here."

[community profile] newcomers is a community for people who are just getting started on Dreamwidth, in the tradition of [community profile] twitter_refugees and [community profile] reddit_refugees. This community supports former users of other platforms who are moving to Dreamwidth because their previous platform has become untenable or has closed. As such, it will increase activity with each wave of new users, in hopes of helping them get settled in Dreamwidth so they want to stick around. It also serves previous users returning after a long hiatus, people who want to do more with a Dreamwidth blog that was only intermittent, or anyone else who wants help connecting and figuring out how to use this venue.

Check-In Post - April 27th 2026

badly_knitted: (Get Knitted)
[personal profile] badly_knitted posting in [community profile] get_knitted

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What do you wish you could get right first time, every time?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Today is cloudy, cool, and wet.  It's been storming all morning.  We sure need the rain.

I fed the birds.

EDIT 4/27/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

Max was a builder. A web of lies, a house of cards, a castle of sand. Everyone starts somewhere, from hay to twigs to brick, chasing after the safety of locked doors and solid stone.

Hiding within a fortress will make you feel invincible, and invincibility is an illusion, a delusion; if the wind blows the wrong way, it comes tumbling down.

Yet it can be a shared delusion. True power needs a sturdy base, but if it gets taken away, you can stand upright for long enough to brave the rain by reputation alone.

And that, Max could craft.

Poem: "The Graffiti of the Rich"

"The Graffiti of the Rich"

[Wednesday, November 5, 2014]

For months, Shiv had been
enjoying the ever-changing display
of graffiti along a retaining wall
between Blues Moon and
Buster Hump's Gym.

It was a perfect place
to get a good feel for
the neighborhood
and its current artists.

Then one day, Shiv
arrived to find that
someone had covered
the wall with grey paint.

Fuming, he glared at
the nearby billboards.

Funny how nobody ever
covered up those eyesores.

That got him thinking about
some stuff that Dr. G had said
about cultures, graffiti, and
what counted as artwork.

Smirking, he pulled out
a black paint pen and
scribbled his rebuttal.

With grey paint we silence
some voices in society.
Advertising is fine -- it is,
after all, the graffiti of the rich

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth Part 3: Dance

Dance is a performing art about moving the body, usually but not always to music. It exists in many styles. Every ethnic group or other cultural identity tends to have their own dances. "No Faster or Firmer Friendships" belongs to Polychrome Heroics and needs $45 to be complete. Josué makes friends with Maria-Vera.

The weather has been mild here. We got some rain the other day. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, and a fox squirrel. Red-winged blackbirds have been singing overhead. I heard a bluejay screaming but didn't see it. Currently blooming: violets, tulips, anemone, Solomon's seal, pansies, violas, sweet alyssum, bleeding heart, chokecherries, alliums, lilies of the valley, marigolds, honeysuckle, raspberies, snapdragons, lantana, million bells, blue lobelia, petunias, portulaca, nemesia, wild chives, star of Bethlehem. Flower buds: peonies. Green fruit: mulberries.

Put your mp3 player/phone/streaming collection on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results.

I'm not a huge fan of memes, or poetry, but I do want to post more during 3W4D and I do occasionally indulge in found poetry, so here goes. Here's the first 20 songs with lyrics from my 'Liked music' playlist on YouTube Music.
